Hi, I’m Mikaela Schlosser, maternal and child health nutritionist at the North Dakota Department of Health. I’m here to talk to you today about World Breastfeeding Week, which is celebrated each year from August 1st to August 7th, to raise awareness about the importance of breastfeeding and spur action around a common theme.
This year’s theme is Step Up For Breastfeeding, Educate and Support. This theme emphasizes that breastfeeding is a team effort. Exclusive breastfeeding, this means no other water, food, or infant formula for approximately the first six months of a child’s life, is recommended by all medical organizations.
We recognize each woman needs support to reach whatever their breastfeeding goal. This support comes from family, friends, healthcare, Women, Infant, and Children program, communities and workplace that create environments to empower women to breastfeed.
