    Dr. Grace Njau:

I’m Dr. Grace Njau, Director of Special Projects and Health Analytics at the North Dakota Department of Health and Human Services. Between 2017 and 2021, nearly 40 families in North Dakota lost their babies to Sudden Unexpected Infant Death syndrome, otherwise known as SIDS. October is National Infant Loss Awareness Month, as well as Sudden Unexpected Infant Death Syndrome Awareness month. Quite a few recommendations from the American Academy of Pediatrics have been shown to reduce the risk of SIDS. These include using a firm non inclined sleep surface to reduce the risk of suffocation, breastfeeding your baby or feeding your baby human milk, as well as offering a pacifier during nap time and at bedtime, avoiding smoking and nicotine exposure during pregnancy and after birth, as well as avoiding alcohol, marijuana, opioids and other illicit drug use during pregnancy and after birth have also been shown to be associated with a lower risk of SIDS.
